For many university students, September is an eagerly anticipated time. Students can reconnect with friends, regain structure in their routine (including those dreaded 9am lectures), and go out four nights a week whilst maintaining social acceptability.

However, for those heading into their final year (me included), September can also bring a sense of panic. The looming reality of life after university becomes harder to ignore, and many start to question what the future holds.

With new challenges and important decisions on the horizon, how can students best prepare to navigate post-grad life, and without a mental breakdown? We reached out to Samantha Riella, Alumni Engagement Officer, and Vipashyana Srivastava, UOL Marketing alumna and co-founder of an AI powered platform for their expert advice.

Gain Experience

It may be a cliché, but industry experience is crucial when applying for jobs, strengthening your CV and demonstrating that you have the skills employers are looking for. When asked for post-grad employment advice, Vipashyana recommended:

“Seek out opportunities for professional development, whether through additional courses, certifications, or industry events. Be open to new ideas and adapt to changes in your field.” - Vipashyana

Samantha echoed the value of seeking out opportunities, adding “Don’t be afraid to reach out to your network for opportunities, shadowing experiences or even just for an informal coffee chat. These experiences can often open unexpected doors.”

Build a Strong Network

You’ve likely heard the saying- it’s not what you know, but who you know. And whilst achieving your best potential in your degree is important, it’s equally vital to invest time in building and nurturing your professional network. Make LinkedIn your best friend- it’s an excellent platform to connect with professionals in your desired field, gain industry insights, and even open doors to new opportunities.

Make LinkedIn your go-to tool; it’s an excellent platform to connect with professionals in your desired field, gain industry insights, and even open doors to new opportunities.

“Connect with everyone you can – classmates, lecturers, and university staff. Also, reach out to alumni and staff like me, who understand what you’re going through and can offer valuable advice. Networking early will pay off in your future career- you’ll be surprised how willing people are to help.” - Samantha

When asked about the best ways to grow your network, Samantha recommended, “Attend as many events as you can, especially in-person ones. Stepping out of your comfort zone is essential to expanding your network.” The Women in Business society have a host of networking opportunities throughout the year (shameless plug), allowing you to meet like-minded individuals navigating the beginning of their career, as well as established industry experts.

Prioritise self care

Social media often makes it seem like everyone is ten steps ahead of you. Everywhere you look, it feels like someone is traveling, getting engaged, landing your dream job. But it’s important to remember that social media only shows the highlight reel, and in reality, most graduates feel just as uncertain as you do. "Everyone has their own unique journey," Samantha advised.

"Focus on what motivates you—your passions, skills, and goals—rather than comparing yourself to someone else's path." - Samantha

To avoid burnout, make sure to take regular breaks from your studies. Carve out time each day to do something that brings you joy, even if it's just for 30 minutes

By embracing opportunities for growth, surrounding yourself with support, and making time for self-care, you can approach this next chapter with confidence and clarity.

The future may feel uncertain, but with the right mindset and strategies, you're more than capable of succeeding!
